Position Summary:

The Earthing and Protection Engineer reports to the Manager, Major Projects and Sustainability and is accountable for the leadership and delivery of the Earthing and Protection functions at Powerplant.

The position is accountable for the overall performance of the Earthing and Protection business functions and plays an important role in helping Powerplant to realize its vision to connect customers with intelligent and sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Key Accountabilities:

Manage Safety

  • Maintain a culture of Health and Safety in all Business Activities;
  • Ensure compliance to company Health and Safety Policies at all times
  • Assess touch and step potential hazards and design mitigation strategies to ensure safety.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international earthing standards (e.g., IEEE 80, AS3000, AS2067, IEC standards).
  • Identify potential risks in existing earthing systems and recommend corrective actions.

Manage Delivery

  • Oversee the lifecycle of a customer project to support customers (and their contractors/consultants) and Powerplant design teams to deliver on their commitments and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Strive to always achieve flawless execution in all areas of the business.
  • Ensure Wrike Works Management System is maintained with accurate information for each project at all times
  • Monitor progress of works and intervene, where necessary, to support the attainment of customer delivery expectations
  • Conduct earthing studies and design safe and effective earthing systems for substations, transmission lines, distribution networks, industrial plants, and renewable energy installations (e.g., solar, wind).
  • Perform earthing system analysis using software tools such as CDEGS, ETAP, or similar platforms.
  • Evaluate soil resistivity data and its impact on earthing system performance.
  • Develop detailed earthing system layouts, equipment grounding plans, and technical specifications.

Manage Performance

  • Manage fee proposals and pricing strategies to ensure an acceptable tender success rate for Earthing and Protection services.
  • Develop new products and services, or enhance existing, to ensure continued growth
  • Collaborate with project teams to integrate earthing systems into the overall design of electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure the successful completion of earthing design and installation phases.
  • Review and approve earthing system design documents, drawings, and specifications.
  • Oversee site installation and testing of earthing systems, ensuring adherence to design specifications and safety requirements.
  • Oversee earthing resistance measurements and other testing procedures to verify system performance.
  • Prepare comprehensive design reports, calculations, and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of earthing system designs, test results, and modifications.

Manage Customer

  • Communicate openly and regularly with customers to manage incoming and outgoing expectations, to be measured by an industry standard Net Promoter Score.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and implement strategies to address customer service issues and improve performance
  • Develop and maintain senior stakeholder relationships with customers and contractors, ensuring open communication at all times
  • Provide an escalation path for customer complaints, performance management and improvement opportunities
  • Solicit feedback from customers on a regular basis, to gauge overall performance

  Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Master’s degree or specialization in power systems is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in electrical earthing design and analysis, preferably in utilities, industrial, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Proficient in earthing system design software (e.g., CDEGS, ETAP, or similar).
  • Familiarity with earthing standards such as IEEE 80 and Australian Standards AS3000, AS2067 and or IEC standards, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety principles related to earthing systems.
  • Experience with earthing system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
