Position Summary:

The Design Team Manager is responsible for managing several electrical distribution design and public lighting teams within Victoria and NSW, delivering a diverse portfolio of projects including electrical overhead and underground designs for utility asset relocation, distribution network authority initiated works and private customer connections up to 66kV, public lighting and power engineering projects.

The Design Team Manager will have two primary areas of focus:

  1. The leadership, development, and support of people; and,
  2. Management of effective project delivery, ensuring successful project outcomes are achieved for our customers.

The Design Team Manager will be supported by principal engineers, business improvement, engineering services and business development leaders. To develop and support our people and deliver exceptional project results for our customers, you will need to lead by example, foster teamwork and collaboration and demonstrate the Powerplant values of People, Performance and Pride in everything that you do.

Key Accountabilities

Manage People:

  • Support Powerplant’s “Safer by Design” strategic principle and build a strong safety culture:
    • Drive safety leadership and compliance with Powerplant’s HSEQ Policy and Procedures, including the Safety in Design safety risk assessment process.
  • Support Powerplant’s “Strong Team” strategic principle to build, attract and retain top talent:
    • Provide leadership, guidance, and support across several teams of engineering staff, comprising stream leaders, senior project engineers, project engineers and graduate engineers.
    • Foster team building, collaboration and knowledge sharing across teams.
    • Provide performance management, coaching and development planning for each team member.
    • Own your accountability and hold others to account.
  • Support Powerplant’s “Sustainable Growth” strategic principle to extend and defend our core distribution design business:
    • Support your stream leaders and team leaders to develop, review and maintain annual financial budgets (revenue and cost) and monthly reviews and reforecasting, as necessary.

Manage Project Delivery:

  • Support Powerplant’s “Professional Engineering” strategic principle, adopting the systems and practices to position Powerplant as a tier one engineering consultancy:
    • Providing timely and astute professional advice to the development of fee proposals, tenders, and customer presentations.
    • Ensure compliance to technical standards, codes of practice and the relevant design principles at all times.
  • Support Powerplant’s “Flawless Execution” strategic principle to drive flawless execution across all parts of our business, and demonstrate our collective leadership qualities by upholding our 8 x Disciplines in Delivery:
    • Staying close to customers and providing regular proactive communication, ensuring our obligations to the customer are always defined, clear and understood.
    • Supporting the team to deliver project designs, plans, documents etc, that are always of the highest quality, measuring quality regularly and seeking to continuously improve.
    • Driving discipline in the Wrike works management system, maintaining project schedules as well as accurate and timely internal and external project status reporting.

Skills and Experience

Qualifications and Experience:

Tertiary qualifications in electrical engineering, project management, business administration, or similar. Minimum 5-10 years of experience in leading people in an engineering or consulting environment. Preferably in a geographically dispersed, multi-disciplinary teams across design, technical or field service disciplines.

  • A solid grasp of project management principles, capable of managing teams to simultaneously manage safety, scope, quality, schedule, and cost outcomes across a portfolio of projects.
  • The following industry experience will be well regarded:
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in developing electrical designs for distribution network authority approval, covering underground and overhead up to 66kV.
    • CPEng or NER accreditation.
    • Demonstrated experience in the use of electronic design systems including network GIS systems.
