Position Summary:

The Senior Project Engineer reports to the Design Team Manager and is responsible for producing approved electrical designs for public lighting installations, predominantly across Victoria. Typical design projects include a range of lighting installations from single light poles in residential streets to major freeway installations, car parks, sports fields or other public areas.

As a Senior Project Engineer you are required to produce electrical and lighting designs of the highest quality, in accordance with the agreed customer timeframe and budget. All electrical designs must comply with the relevant electrical distribution authority technical requirements, state based standards as well as the applicable Australian Standards.  You will be charged with delivering and managing lighting and electrical  design projects from small projects up to large major infrastructure projects, with assistance from Principal Engineer as required.

You will also have some responsibility for the professional development of project engineers and for supporting their project delivery obligations. Proactive engagement with private customers and distribution authority stakeholders and other internal and external stakeholders is a must, in order to identify and resolve issues impacting design, and to ensure that client expectations are managed throughout the project lifecycle.

As a Senior Project Engineer you are required to work in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week and foster teamwork and collaboration across the project portfolio. As a senior member of the Lighting Design team you are required to lead by example and demonstrate the Powerplant values of People, Performance and Pride in everything that you do.

Key Accountabilities

Manage Safety:

  • Always comply with Powerplant’s HSEQ Policy and Procedures.
  • Ensure the SiD (Safety in Design) risk assessment process is followed.

Manage Customers:

  • Provide the Customer with proactive communications and regular updates on:
    • Project status
    • Technical risks/issues
    • Approvals
    • Network authority review and approval progress
  • Ensure our obligations to the customer are always defined, clear and understood.
  • Attend Customer meetings and site visits, as required.

Manage Technical Solution:

  • Obtain design approval from the relevant distribution network authority.
  • Assume responsibility for the technical solution for the life of the project, from acceptance of the Fee Proposal to design approval.
  • Initiate design review meetings to identify and resolve potential compliance and construction risks prior to submission to the distribution network authority for approval.
  • Review and submit design changes as required for the life of the project.
  • Be aware of best practice for design of lighting / electrical and keep up to date with latest industry trends

Manage Design Quality:

  • Always strive to achieve the highest level of design quality for every project.
  • Ensure designs are compliant with the relevant standards and guidelines, are constructable and presented clearly on Powerplant’s design drawings.
  • Ensure Powerplant’s quality assurance process is followed at all times.
  • Review your own work and ensure it is of the highest standard.
  • Support peer reviews and final reviews, as requested.
  • Eradicate basic drafting errors and maximise first time pass for all distribution designs.

Manage Customer Schedule:

  • Maintain the project schedule in Wrike often, identify critical path schedule risks and implementing mitigation steps to maintain customer expectations.
  • Maintain a Wrike dashboard to monitor project status for your projects as well as an overview of the relevant distribution stream portfolio of projects.
  • Provide proactive communication to clients on the progress of the design for their Projects.

Demonstrate Leadership / Manage People:

  • Work with Project Engineers / Designers and support them to achieve high quality outcomes by:
    • Defining the scope of work and/or concept plan to ensure each project is initiated with the correct technical approach.
    • Auditing a sample of distribution design SiD assessments to ensure SiD outcomes continuously align with Powerplant and customer expectations.
    • Regularly reviewing project schedules, identifying risks and proactively guiding the necessary actions to eradicate schedule slippage.
    • Monitoring quality, ensuring the QA process is followed and all designs submitted are of the highest possible quality.
    • Collaborating with the Engineering Services team to ensure design and drafting activities always support customer expectations and Powerplant values.
  • Working with Project Engineers to ensure their project budget is established correctly in Wrike, cash flow is maximised by raising Progress and Final claims in a timely manner (not just EOM) and Variations are raised, approved by the client and invoiced in a timely manner.
  • Support the ongoing professional development of Project Engineers and design/drafting staff to continuously improve their technical knowledge.

Support Project Initiation:

  • Provide input to and review lighting design fee proposals, as required.
  • Ensure the correct project metrics are initiated in Wrike (project timeline, budget and scope)
  • Provide Project Support team with necessary information required for network applications, contracts, tenders.
  • Support new client presentations and/or company promotions.

Skills and Experience

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree qualified in electrical engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in developing electrical public lighting designs for distribution network authority approval, covering underground and overhead applications.
  • CPEng or NER accreditation, or eligible to attain accreditation.
  • Sound knowledge of AutoCAD, Microstation, Perfectlite and AGI32 industry drafting standards.
  • A solid grasp of the project management discipline, capable of simultaneously managing safety, scope, quality, schedule, and cost, for a given project.

Design Experience:

The following design experience will be well regarded:

  • Demonstrated experience in the use of electronic design systems including network GIS systems.
  • Design development to AS3000, AS7000 and/or AS2067.
  • Familiarity with VicRoads / DoT Standards or Transport for NSW standards
